Guyana has become the United Kingdom’s largest trading partner in CARICOM, marking a major shift in the country’s commercial relationship with Britain as its economy expands rapidly.
Founding Chairman of the British Chamber of Commerce Guyana, Faizal Khan, said trade between the two countries is moving in both directions, though exports from Guyana to the UK are currently slightly higher.
“Guyana is now the largest trading partner in CARICOM with the United Kingdom,” Khan said.
Khan said BritCham Guyana is focused not only on helping British companies enter Guyana, but also on supporting Guyanese businesses that want to expand into the UK market.
He said the Chamber now sits in the middle of a growing business ecosystem, helping to connect UK and Guyanese companies at a time when Guyana is attracting increased international attention.
The growing trade relationship comes as Guyana continues to position itself as one of the world’s fastest-growing economies, driven by oil and gas, but increasingly linked to opportunities in agriculture, construction, mining, services, tourism and finance.
Khan said the Chamber has developed a strong membership base and is working to create more opportunities for Guyanese businesses to enter the UK.
He also pointed to several factors supporting the relationship, including direct British Airways flights, visa-free travel in both directions and Guyana’s position as the UK’s biggest CARICOM trading partner.
For international investors, Guyana’s rise as the UK’s top CARICOM trading partner signals the country’s growing role in regional commerce and its increasing importance as a gateway for British businesses seeking opportunities in the Caribbean and northern South America.
