Guyana’s Central Housing and Planning Authority is inviting contractors, consortiums and individuals to submit proposals for the construction of 400-square-foot homes under the Social Housing Programme. The call creates an opportunity for builders, suppliers and related service providers to participate in a programme intended to widen access to affordable homes while supporting construction activity.
According to an official DPI announcement, the initiative is aimed at improving access to safe and affordable housing for extremely vulnerable and economically disadvantaged households. The proposed flat units are expected to include one bedroom, a toilet and bath, ceiling, tiled floors and basic kitchen cupboards.
For contractors, housing programmes of this kind are not limited to the construction of individual structures. They generate demand across a wider local chain: masonry, carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, roofing, transport, finishing materials, equipment hire and professional services all have a role to play. When work is packaged and delivered at scale, firms that can meet quality, timing and compliance requirements can develop repeat business and stronger operating capacity.
The programme also has a broader economic relevance. Housing development opens new communities to roads, utilities, retail services and other investments that follow residential growth. A completed home is therefore part of a larger process that can create activity for small businesses, developers and service providers in the surrounding area.
Applicants must demonstrate technical, financial and operational capacity. Required submissions include business-registration documents, GRA and VAT compliance certificates, audited 2025 financial statements, evidence of comparable work, available equipment, personnel qualifications, a work programme and financing details. The requirements place value on local firms that can mobilise teams, manage materials, work to technical specifications and complete projects reliably.
Expressions of interest are due to the Chairman of the CH&PA Board at Plantation Houston, East Bank Demerara, by 3:00 p.m. on September 21, 2026. Transparent procurement and performance will be important, since the quality of delivery directly affects the families who will occupy the homes.
For potential home owners, the continued construction programme represents more than a building target. It can provide a route to greater household stability and a base from which families can plan, save and invest. For the economy, it supports the construction sector while linking public policy to tangible assets in communities across the country.
