Guyana and Peru have taken a major step towards strengthening regional connectivity and deepening economic cooperation with the signing of a historic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between their respective Civil Aviation Authorities.
The agreement signals the start of formal negotiations towards a comprehensive Air Services Agreement (ASA), a development expected to significantly enhance air transport links, facilitate trade and tourism, and create new opportunities for investment and business expansion between the two South American nations.
Officials from both countries hailed the signing as a milestone in the longstanding bilateral relationship and reaffirmed their commitment to finalising the ASA in accordance with their respective national procedures.
Once concluded, the agreement will enable airlines from Guyana and Peru to operate scheduled passenger, cargo and mail services on mutually agreed routes, opening new avenues for commerce and people-to-people exchanges.
Importantly, the MoU provides for extensive traffic rights, including third, fourth, fifth and sixth freedom rights for mixed passenger and cargo services, as well as up to seventh freedom rights for dedicated all-cargo operations. These provisions are expected to enhance regional logistics, improve market access and strengthen supply chains across the continent.
The virtual signing ceremony brought together Director General of the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), Lt. Col. (Ret’d) Egbert Field, and Director General of Peru’s Directorate for Civil Aviation, Paola Mariella Marin Ugarte, both of whom underscored the strategic importance of enhanced aviation connectivity in driving regional integration and sustainable economic growth.
Beyond expanding air services, the MoU also reflects a shared commitment to advancing aviation safety standards, strengthening regulatory cooperation and pursuing innovative solutions that support a modern and resilient aviation sector.
Signed virtually in both English and Spanish, the agreement highlights the spirit of partnership and mutual respect that continues to define Guyana-Peru relations while positioning both countries to benefit from increased connectivity, trade and investment flows across the region.
