Cargojet Lands in Guyana as Air Freight Boom Fuels Trade and Business Growth

Guyana’s expanding economy and growing trade sector have attracted another major international cargo operator, with Cargojet Airways Ltd. set to begin air cargo operations in the country on June 12, strengthening logistics capacity and supporting increased commercial activity.

The Canadian cargo airline will operate weekly non-scheduled cargo services for DHL Express USA on the Miami–Caracas–Georgetown–Medellín–Miami route, providing businesses with enhanced access to regional and international markets.

The launch follows engagements earlier this year between President Dr. Irfaan Ali and Cargojet executives in Canada. In preparation for the commencement of services, Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation Deodat Indar met with representatives of DHL, including Executive Director Maurice John and DHL Aviation America’s Director of Business Development and ACS Strategy, Xavier Cerruto.

Minister Indar welcomed the new service, noting that Cargojet’s decision to enter the Guyanese market reflects growing international confidence in the country’s economic prospects and expanding trade opportunities.

The airline’s arrival comes amid unprecedented growth in Guyana’s air cargo sector. Total cargo volumes increased from 7.6 million kilograms in 2020 to 14.4 million kilograms in 2025, representing an 88.5 per cent increase over five years.

The surge has been driven largely by imports of industrial equipment and supplies supporting the country’s rapidly expanding oil and gas industry, as well as increased e-commerce activity and growing demand for faster and more reliable freight services.

Growth has continued into 2026, with cargo volumes rising by an additional 21 per cent year-to-date, highlighting the increasingly critical role of air freight in supporting business operations, trade expansion and national development.

Industry officials say the addition of Cargojet will further strengthen Guyana’s logistics infrastructure, increase cargo capacity and improve connectivity with key markets across the Americas.

Cargojet joins a growing list of international cargo carriers serving Guyana, including LATAM Cargo and Avianca Cargo, whose operations have helped diversify and expand the country’s air freight network.

As investment continues to flow into Guyana and commercial activity accelerates across multiple sectors, the expansion of air cargo services is expected to play a vital role in facilitating trade, supporting private sector growth and enhancing the country’s competitiveness as a regional business destination.
