The National Assembly of Guyana is set to consider a $54.9 billion Supplementary Financial Paper on Monday, aimed at advancing development initiatives across several key sectors.
Senior Minister in the Office of the President with Responsibility for Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh, said the proposed allocations are intended to accelerate government projects and improve service delivery nationwide.
The largest allocation, $17.5 billion, has been earmarked for the Ministry of Housing to expedite housing development and address the backlog of applications.
The agriculture sector is slated to receive $8.3 billion, including $3 billion for GUYSUCO, which will fund retroactive payments for sugar workers, $807.5 million for the Guyana Rice Development Board, and $4.5 billion for the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority.
A further $19.1 billion has been proposed for the Office of the Prime Minister, with a significant portion supporting the Gas-to-Energy Project. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Public Works is seeking $8.5 billion, comprising $6 billion for miscellaneous roads and drainage works and $2.5 billion for hinterland road development.
Additional allocations include $600 million for the maintenance of coastal airstrips under the Ministry of Public Utilities and Aviation, $496.3 million for water sector interventions, and $60 million for the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
According to Dr. Singh, the supplementary budget will strengthen the government’s continued investments in infrastructure, housing, agriculture, energy, and public services, with the overall objective of enhancing the quality of life for Guyanese.
