GUYANA’S TOURISM INDUSTRY RECORDS HISTORIC GROWTH IN MAY 2026

Guyana’s tourism sector achieved a major milestone in May 2026, recording 40,149 visitor arrivals, the highest number ever recorded for the month and a 20.6% increase compared to May 2025.

The strong performance underscores the growing role of tourism as a key driver of economic activity, investment, and job creation, while reinforcing Guyana’s emergence as one of the region’s fastest-growing destinations.

Growth was supported by a vibrant calendar of events associated with Guyana’s 60th Diamond Jubilee Independence celebrations, including the Guyana Festival, Street Food on the Terrace, and Guyana Carnival activities, which generated increased visitor spending and strengthened demand across hospitality, transportation, entertainment, and related services.

The United States remained Guyana’s largest source market, accounting for 37% of total arrivals, followed by the Caribbean (33%), Latin America (10%), Canada (8%), Europe (6%), and other international markets (6%). This diversified visitor base highlights Guyana’s expanding global appeal and growing connectivity with key tourism markets.

Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Susan Rodrigues, said the results demonstrate the effectiveness of continued investments in tourism infrastructure, destination marketing, and cultural programming.

“The results recorded in May reflect the continued growth of tourism as a key contributor to Guyana’s economic development. They highlight the impact of sustained investment in our tourism product, cultural programming, and major events, and reinforce the importance of building on this momentum to ensure benefits reach communities across the country.”

Director of the Guyana Tourism Authority, Kamrul Baksh, noted that the record performance reflects ongoing progress in destination development and industry collaboration.

“These results reflect continued progress in how Guyana is being positioned as a destination. We are seeing the impact of sustained product development, stronger coordination across stakeholders, and a continued focus on improving the visitor experience.”

The record-breaking figures signal increasing confidence in Guyana’s tourism offering and highlight the sector’s growing contribution to national development, private sector growth, and international competitiveness.
