Businesses poised to benefit as Wales Gas-to-Energy project accelerates

With the rapid advancement of the Wales Gas-to-Energy (GtE) project, major business and industrial opportunities are set to be unlocked across Guyana as construction intensifies and cheaper electricity moves closer to reality.

Prime Minister Mark Phillips said the landmark 300-megawatt project remains on track to deliver first power to the national grid by the end of 2026, with the wider initiative projected to cut electricity costs by 50 percent for households and businesses.

The reduction in energy costs is expected to significantly improve the competitiveness of local industries, manufacturers and commercial enterprises, while lowering operating expenses across the economy.

The Wales Development Zone is also emerging as a major industrial hub, with plans for complementary investments including an ammonia and urea plant, gas bottling and logistics facilities, and marine storage infrastructure for natural gas liquids.

Government said these projects are expected to create thousands of jobs while opening opportunities for local contractors, suppliers, transport operators and service providers.

As construction activity expands, demand is already increasing in sectors such as transportation, logistics, construction materials and industrial support services, creating what officials describe as a “widening circle of economic opportunity” for Guyanese businesses.

The administration noted that the overall Gas-to-Energy initiative — including the power plant, transmission infrastructure, substations and National Control Centre remains within the projected US$1.1 billion budget ceiling, inclusive of contingency costs.

Contractor Lindsayca Guyana Inc. has committed to bringing the first gas turbine online by the end of 2026, with full commissioning expected by the first quarter of 2027 and combined-cycle operations scheduled for completion by June 2027.

Government says the project forms a central pillar of Guyana’s industrialisation strategy, aimed at reducing dependence on imported fuel, strengthening energy security and supporting long-term economic growth through affordable and reliable power.
