Guyana’s Expanding Economy Creates New Opportunities for Entrepreneurs and Investors- Former GCCI President

Executive Member of the Private Sector Commission (PSC) and former President of the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI), Timothy Tucker, says Guyana’s rapidly expanding economy is creating unprecedented opportunities for entrepreneurship, investment and business growth across multiple sectors.

Speaking on the Starting Point podcast, Tucker said Guyana’s economic transformation is no longer being driven by a single industry. Instead, sectors such as oil and gas, mining, forestry, agriculture and construction are generating sustained demand for new businesses, skilled professionals and support services.

“There are so many opportunities,” Tucker said, noting that the country’s economic momentum has opened doors for Guyanese to launch businesses, develop side ventures and fill critical gaps in the market.

He highlighted the oil and gas sector as a major catalyst for raising business standards, explaining that international requirements are encouraging local companies to improve their operations and competitiveness.

“The oil and gas industry is demanding international standards. It’s forcing local manufacturers to raise their game—not only to pursue export markets, but also to compete effectively within Guyana,” he explained.

According to Tucker, as companies strengthen their capabilities, they create demand for a wider network of suppliers, consultants and specialised service providers, presenting new opportunities for entrepreneurs.

He identified occupations including truck drivers, health and safety professionals, quality assurance specialists, mechanics, electricians, plumbers and general construction workers as being in particularly high demand due to the country’s ongoing infrastructure and industrial expansion.

“We see something as simple as truck drivers being a high-demand job at the moment that is paying extremely well,” Tucker said, pointing to the nationwide construction boom and labour shortages.

Tucker encouraged aspiring entrepreneurs to take advantage of the current economic climate, advising those who may be reluctant to leave full-time employment to begin by building businesses alongside their existing careers.

“I would say, keep your day job and work that side gig. Everything counts. You’ve got to be able to diversify, look for your niche product or service, and really try to fill the gaps in the market,” he advised.

While emphasizing the abundance of opportunities, Tucker cautioned that business success requires careful planning, market research and a clear understanding of customer demand. He noted that market research remains an underdeveloped area in Guyana, creating another business opportunity for entrepreneurs with expertise in data collection and market analysis.

“There are opportunities all around you. You just have to look for them,” he said.
