Guyana strengthens rice sector with $3B cash injection to farmers

The Guyana Government will begin disbursing cash subsidies to rice farmers across the country from next week, injecting approximately $3 billion into the agricultural economy and reinforcing confidence in one of the country’s key export industries.

The initiative fulfils a commitment made by the country’s President Dr. Irfaan Ali during consultations with rice farmers at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre amid growing global pressures on agricultural production and commodity markets.

Under the programme, farmers cultivating 50 acres or less will receive $15,000 per acre, while producers with holdings exceeding 50 acres will benefit from $10,000 per acre through direct cash transfers.

The Ministry of Agriculture, through the Guyana Rice Development Board (GRDB), has completed registration and verification exercises to ensure transparency and accountability in the distribution process, clearing the way for payments to commence.

The $3 billion intervention is expected to provide significant liquidity to rural economies, support farm reinvestment, and enhance the competitiveness of Guyana’s rice industry.
Industry stakeholders anticipate that the financial support will help farmers offset rising production costs, maintain output levels, and strengthen the sector’s contribution to export earnings.

In a press release, the Ministry of Agriculture said the measure underscores its long-term commitment to safeguarding agricultural investments, supporting rural livelihoods, and positioning Guyana’s rice industry for sustained growth, improved productivity, and greater resilience in an increasingly challenging global market.
