UG to roll out Transportation Management master’s as Guyana’s logistics economy expands

The University of Guyana’s School of Entrepreneurship and Business Innovation (SEBI) is moving to fill a growing skills gap in Guyana’s transport and logistics sector with a new Master of Science programme in Transportation Management set to begin in February 2026.

The University said the programme was developed in response to challenges tied to transportation, logistics, road construction and the efficiency needs of a modernising economy.

For the private sector, those pressures translate into higher operating costs, delivery delays, supply chain bottlenecks and reduced competitiveness, issues the university believes can be eased through better planning and management expertise.

The 39-credit programme will be delivered in a hybrid format and can be completed in two years full-time or three years part-time. The tertiary institution said the curriculum will cover areas such as Transportation Policy and Planning, Artificial Intelligence and Transportation Planning, Public Transport Management, Fundamentals of Transportation Security, and Transportation Geography and the Environment, skills increasingly relevant to companies operating fleets, managing distribution, investing in infrastructure projects, or navigating regulatory compliance.

A key feature, the university noted, will be practical attachments with public and private-sector agencies, providing students with workplace exposure and offering organisations a pipeline of trained professionals.

Dean of SEBI, Professor Leyland Lucas, said the initiative targets the economic impact of weak transportation systems, warning that inefficiencies carry both direct and indirect costs for society and business.

He pointed to major housing expansion along key corridors, increased vehicle ownership, ongoing road projects and the need to enhance port capabilities as factors making professional transportation management more urgent.

UG Vice-Chancellor Professor Paloma Mohamed Martin said the programme is part of a slate of “new generation” offerings being introduced in early 2026, describing it as a timely response to the training needs of Guyana and the wider region.

The programme will be open to qualified graduates from accredited tertiary institutions and will utilise local and foreign faculty, citing the skills gap currently affecting the university, while local capacity is developed.
