Air Transat launches Guyana-Canada business link

The Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) on Tuesday welcomed Air Transat’s inaugural flight to Georgetown, a move officials say will strengthen Guyana’s commercial links with Canada by improving access for business travel, trade and the diaspora while supporting the airport’s longer-term growth strategy.

The new service will operate twice weekly until May 29, 2026, using the Airbus A321LR, which CJIA described as a next-generation aircraft designed for efficiency and passenger comfort.

The route is expected to widen travel options for Canadian-based investors and Guyanese businesses with ties to the Canadian market, while also supporting tourism-related spending.

Chairman of CJIA’s Board of Directors, Sanjeev Datadin, said the addition of Air Transat signals a deliberate approach to building Guyana’s airlift and positioning the airport for future demand.

“The addition of this service reflects the deliberate, long-term approach being taken to increase Guyana’s airlift,” Datadin said, adding that the board is focused on strong airline partnerships, sound governance and investments that keep CJIA aligned with international standards.
From the airline’s perspective, Air Transat’s Chief Revenue Officer, Sebastian Ponce, said the Georgetown route strengthens the carrier’s relationship with Canada’s Guyanese community and creates a more seamless option for travellers seeking direct access to Guyana, including for commercial activity and cultural engagement.

Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation, Deodat Indar, described the new route as part of the Government of Guyana’s broader push to expand international connectivity as a pillar of national development.

“Improved and reliable air links are essential to supporting economic growth, facilitating trade, and strengthening Guyana’s integration with key international markets,” Indar said.

Indar also pointed to the business implications of attracting a carrier like Air Transat, arguing that the launch reflects confidence in Guyana’s aviation oversight and regulatory framework.

He said the government continues to strengthen safety, security and compliance in keeping with international standards to support sustainable sector growth.
