Guyana engages Belgian delegation on potential cooperation in port development

Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation Deodat Indar met with a Belgian delegation recently to explore opportunities for technical cooperation in the development and modernisation of Guyana’s maritime port infrastructure.

The delegation was led by the European Union’s Ambassador to Guyana, Luca Pierantoni. It included representatives of Port of Antwerp-Bruges International, one of Europe’s largest shipping and logistics hubs.

Discussions focused on areas where international expertise could support Guyana’s port expansion efforts and enhance operational efficiency.

The engagement examined potential collaboration in areas such as port planning, logistics management, and infrastructure development, as Guyana seeks to strengthen its maritime capacity to support rising trade volumes and industrial activity.

The engagement comes as Guyana continues to prioritise the development of its maritime sector, recognising the country’s growing role in regional and international trade.

Efficient port infrastructure is increasingly viewed as essential to supporting the expanding oil and gas industry, facilitating exports, and improving the overall investment environment.

The meeting was also attended by several senior government and investment officials, including Parliamentary Secretary Thandi McAllister, Go-Invest Chief Investment Officer Peter Ramsaroop, Senior Director of Investment John Edghill, the Ministry’s Director General Alfonso DeArmas, Director General of MARAD Stephen Thomas, and Director of Ports and Harbours Louise Williams.
